En: There, in one of its quiet and cozy courtyards, amidst willows and hydrangeas, Alexander tried to accomplish his difficult task.

Uk: Олександр був дуже збентежений. Він давно хотів вразити Марію, дівчину з його групи з Львова, яка навчилася сприймати життя з боку гумору.
En: Alexander was very distraught. He had long wanted to impress Maria, a girl from his Lviv group, who had learned to perceive life with a sense of humor.

Uk: Вона завжди змушувала людей сміятися, а головне, що їй подобалося, це були гострі слова української мови, особливо скоромовки.
En: She always made people laugh, and most importantly, she liked sharp words of the Ukrainian language, especially tongue twisters.

Uk: "Чи вірта... гір... хрівта... ні, це не так...". Олександр повторював скоромовку, сидячи у тіні давнього камінного хреста і не ризикуючи підняти погляд на Марію.
En: "Che vi... hir... khrivta... no, that's not right..." Alexander repeated the tongue twister, sitting in the shade of an ancient stone cross, and not daring to look up at Maria.

Uk: Але вона була тут, поруч, її теплий сміх і її світло біле плаття віяли літнім спекотним повітрям.
En: But she was there, next to him, her warm laughter and her bright white dress wafting through the hot summer air.

Uk: Він зважився і, збираючись з силами, вигукнув: "Вірта кругом коня хрів за гору!"
En: He gathered his courage and, mustering all his strength, exclaimed, "Virta kruhom konya khriv za horu!"

Uk: Але слова злиплись, і замість скоромовки вийшло незрозуміле бурчання, що похоже на дивну заклинальну формулу.
En: But the words clung together, and instead of the tongue twister, there came an incomprehensible mumbling that resembled a strange incantation.

Uk: На мить настала тиша. Потім Марія вибухнула сміхом, а Олександр червонів, переповнений збентеженням.
En: Then Maria burst into laughter, and Alexander blushed, filled with embarrassment.

Uk: Марія заливалася сміхом, але це було щире, доброзичливе сміх, що вразило Олександра більше, ніж скоромовка, яку він збирався для неї вивчити.
En: Maria laughed heartily, but it was genuine, friendly laughter that impressed Alexander more than the tongue twister he had planned to learn for her.

Uk: Потім вона почала говорити: "Олександр, мені подобаються люди, які намагаються. І м’який чоловічий голос, що каже скоромовку... це просто чудово!"
En: Then she began to speak: "Alexander, I like people who try. And a soft masculine voice saying a tongue twister... it's just wonderful!"

Uk: На його обличчі з'явилася щира посмішка, а своєю долонею Олександр протер лице, відволікаючись від розчарування.
En: A sincere smile appeared on his face, and Alexander wiped his face with his hand, momentarily distracted from disappointment.

Uk: Марія подивилася на нього, сміячись, і стиснула його руку. "Поряд із тобою, сонячна весна, здається, ніколи не закінчується", прошепотіла вона.
En: Maria looked at him, laughing, and squeezed his hand. "Next to you, sunny spring, it seems like it never ends," she whispered.

Uk: Вже не важливо, що скоромовка не вдалася. Олександр усвідомив, що зміг вразити Марію ще більше своєю відвагою й нездатністю казати скоромовки.
En: It no longer mattered that the tongue twister failed. Alexander realized that he was able to impress Maria even more with his courage and inability to say tongue twisters.

Uk: А широка посмішка Марії, що сяяла на нього, була найкращим підтвердженням цього. Київ, з його старими вежами і новими стосунками, став свідком однієї з найкращих історій Олександра й Марії.
En: And Maria's wide, radiant smile was the best confirmation of that. Kyiv, with its old towers and new relationships, became witness to one of Alexander and Maria's best stories.
