Beauty in Uncertainty: Mathilde’s Story

Story Transcript:
Fr: La mer Méditerranée scintillait sous le chaud soleil provençal alors que Mathilde se promenait dans les rues pavées de Saint-Tropez.
En: The Mediterranean Sea glittered in the warm Provençal sun as Mathilde walked along the cobblestone streets of Saint-Tropez.

Fr: Elle espérait trouver un logement pendant ses vacances, mais jusqu’à présent, elle n’avait pas eu de chance.
En: She had been hoping to find a place to stay during her vacation but so far she had had no luck.

Fr: En passant devant un restaurant, elle a décidé de s’arrêter et de demander conseil au propriétaire.
En: As she passed a restaurant, she decided to stop and ask the owner for advice.

Fr: Mathilde a poussé les portes du restaurant et a été accueillie par l’odeur des plats fraîchement cuisinés.
En: Mathilde pushed open the doors to the restaurant and was greeted with the smell of freshly cooked food.

Fr: Elle pouvait voir un homme dans le coin parler à des clients et elle s’avança.
En: She could see a man in the corner talking to some customers and she made her way over.

Fr: En se rapprochant, elle put distinguer le nom « Timothée » imprimé sur le tablier du restaurant qu’il portait.
En: As she got closer, she could make out the name ‘Timothée’ printed on the restaurant’s apron he was wearing.

Fr: Mathilde se racla la gorge pour attirer son attention et il sourit chaleureusement en réponse.
En: Mathilde cleared her throat to get his attention and he smiled warmly in response.

Fr: “Bonjour,” dit-il, “Comment puis-je vous aider?”
En: “Good afternoon,” he said, “How can I help you?”

Fr: “Je cherche un logement pendant mes vacances”, lui dit Mathilde.
En: “I’m looking for a place to stay during my vacation,” Mathilde told him.

Fr: “Avez-vous des suggestions?”
En: “Do you have any suggestions?”

Fr: Timothée sourit et dit : « J’ai bien peur de ne pas pouvoir t’aider, mais je peux t’offrir autre chose.
En: Timothée smiled and said, “I’m afraid I can’t help you with that, but I can offer you something else.

Fr: Voudrais-tu une tasse de café noir ?
En: Would you like a cup of café noir?

Fr: C’est offert par la maison.
En: It’s on the house.”

Fr: Mathilde a été surprise par l’offre mais l’a acceptée avec le sourire.
En: Mathilde was taken aback by the offer but accepted it with a smile.

Fr: Elle s’assit à une table pendant que Timothée lui apportait le café.
En: She sat down at a table while Timothée got her the coffee.

Fr: Pendant qu’elle attendait, elle regarda autour du restaurant et ne put s’empêcher d’être impressionnée.
En: As she waited, she looked around the restaurant and couldn’t help but be impressed.

Fr: Le décor était décontracté et accueillant, et le personnel semblait heureux et joyeux.
En: The décor was relaxed and inviting, and the staff seemed to be happy and cheerful.

Fr: Lorsque Timothée est revenu avec le café, il s’est assis en face de Mathilde et a dit : « Je suis désolé de ne pas avoir pu t’aider à trouver un logement, mais je voulais te laisser avec ça.
