The Power of One: Rwanda’s English Revolution

Story Transcript:
Fr: Le peuple rwandais savait que s’il voulait une chance d’un avenir meilleur, les enfants devaient apprendre la langue des « nantis » dans le monde.
En: The Rwandan people knew that if they wanted any chance of a brighter future, the children had to learn the language of the ‘haves’ in the world.

Fr: Pascal a toujours été un rêveur, croyant que peu importe les circonstances, il y avait toujours un moyen d’aider quelqu’un.
En: Pascal had always been a dreamer, a believer that no matter the circumstances, there was always a way to help someone.

Fr: Et maintenant, il avait une opportunité incroyable d’aider les enfants rwandais dans leur propre langue.
En: And now he had an incredible opportunity to help the Rwandan children in their own language.

Fr: Il s’était inscrit pour être bénévole et enseigner l’anglais au Rwanda, et il était à la fois excité et un peu nerveux.
En: He had signed up to be a volunteer and teach English in Rwanda, and he was both excited and a little nervous.

Fr: C’était le premier jour du nouveau travail de Pascal en tant que professeur d’anglais bénévole et il était déterminé à faire une différence.
En: It was the first day of Pascal’s new job as a volunteer English teacher and he was determined to make a difference.

Fr: Les enfants étaient tous très sympathiques et accueillants, et ils ont tous travaillé ensemble pour apprendre.

Fr: Les enfants avaient beaucoup de questions, mais Pascal les a encouragés à poser et y a répondu patiemment.
En: The children had a lot of questions, but Pascal encouraged them to ask and answered them patiently.

Fr: Après quelques semaines, il a pu voir les enfants progresser dans leur apprentissage et devenir plus confiants avec leur nouvelle langue.
En: After a few weeks, he could see the children progressing in their learning and becoming more confident with their new language.

Fr: Les mois qui ont suivi ont été remplis de plaisir et d’apprentissage.
En: The months that followed were filled with lots of fun and learning.

Fr: Pascal a noué un lien fort avec les enfants et était tellement fier de les voir s’épanouir.
En: Pascal formed a strong bond with the children and was so proud to see them blossoming.

Fr: Ils ont dépassé toutes les attentes et ont même pu répondre aux questions en anglais sans que Pascal ait à les inciter.
En: They surpassed all expectations and were even able to answer questions in English without Pascal having to prompt them.

Fr: Mais quelque chose s’est passé.
En: But then something happened.

Fr: Le gouvernement local a décidé que l’école devait être fermée.
En: The local government decided that the school needed to be shut down.

Fr: Les enfants étaient dévastés et avaient l’impression que tout le travail acharné qu’ils avaient fait n’avait servi à rien.
En: The children were devastated and felt like all the hard work they had done had been for nothing.

Fr: Pascal était déterminé à trouver un moyen pour les enfants de continuer à apprendre l’anglais.
En: Pascal was determined to find a way for the children to keep learning English.

Fr: Il se rendit auprès des autorités locales et fit un plaidoyer passionné pour les enfants.
En: He went to the local authorities and made an impassioned plea for the children.

Fr: Il a fait valoir que les enfants faisaient une grande différence dans la communauté et qu’il ne fallait pas leur refuser la possibilité d’apprendre simplement à cause d’une décision bureaucratique.
En: He argued that the children were making a great difference in the community and that they shouldn’t be denied the opportunity to learn just because of a bureaucratic decision.

Fr: Le gouvernement local a finalement accepté de laisser les enfants poursuivre leurs cours d’anglais.
En: The local government eventually agreed to let the children continue their English classes.

Fr: Les enfants étaient ravis et Pascal a été submergé par leur enthousiasme.
En: The children were ecstatic and Pascal was overwhelmed by their enthusiasm.

Fr: Cette expérience a changé la vie de Pascal.
En: This experience changed Pascal’s life.

Fr: Il se sentait si fier d’avoir pu faire une différence dans la vie des enfants rwandais.
En: He felt so proud to have been able to make a difference in the lives of the Rwandan children.

Fr: Dès lors, Pascal a su qu’il n’était jamais trop petit pour avoir un grand impact.
En: From then on, Pascal knew that he was never too small to make a big impact.

Fr: Il avait montré le pouvoir d’une personne pour apporter un changement positif dans le monde.
